A Great Day In Brighton With Neale James From The PhotoWalk Podcast.

I had the pleasure of meeting Neale James of the PhotoWalk podcast in Brighton yesterday. A great opportunity to catch up and take photos of an iconic British seaside town.

We met for the first time in March as we live quite close to each other but just never managed to get together again. Neale was down to give a talk at a local camera club and asked if I fancied meeting up. Brighton is about an 1 1/2 drive for me so well worth taking the trip.

We were due to met at 1pm but I decided to make most of a day off and got down for 11am. Which gave me a bit of time to wander around and take some images on my own.

Initially, I decided to pack light and only take my Fujifilm X-E3 and TT Artisan 25mm f2. Plus my new iPhone 15 pro which I was quite excited to give a bit of a run. But me being me, I managed to sneak in the Reto Ultra Wide & Slim and Lomo LC-A. Although in the end I just used the Reto, but as that is a film camera it will have a wait a while for me to get around to developing and scanning it. With my current track record that will be about 6 months!

Luckily, the weather was kind with glorious blue skies. I decided to shoot a lot today contra jour and get some nice silhouettes in black and white of the Fujifilm X-E3.

I’ve been to Brighton a few times over the years but the last few were in Autumn or Winter and I didn’t get the best of the weather so I really enjoyed walking around.

It also gave me the opportunity to get some images in the bag before I joined Neale. I’ve not done a photo walk before so I was worried I’d lack the capacity to walk, talk and take photos!

You are going to spot a bit of a trend with the images today. Whenever I take anything with quite a bit of sky in, its often got some form of bird. Sometimes this is by accident but often I’ll wait for a while for one to arrive to add a bit of interested to the shot.

This was an example of having to wait for about 10 minutes for damn gull to appear. Normally you can’t move for them.

Neale was running a bit late so on this occasion I had lots of opportunities to capture an image with a bird in it.

Graffiti

Once Neale had arrived we went straight for lunch and had a bit of a wander. I didn’t take too many photos at this point. Although I did get a bit creative and took a couple of self portraits with the iPhone 15 pro.

Neale then recorded some audio for his “Extra Mile”, a weekly piece that only his Patreon listeners get to listen to and also participate in.

We finished off with a wander around the Laines and the Brighton Pavilion.

Graffiti on downpipes

A few of the back streets are covered in graffiti. All very colourful but not so great when you have decided it’s generally a b&w day.

This was graffiti within graffiti, a downpipe from a building, a bit like one of those Matryoshka dolls

Had to sneak a final bird picture in before we went for dinner. As we were right on the seafront it could only be fish and chips!

Great day, enjoyed it… 4 star (or was it 5) fish n chips, nice way to end the walk. I’m starting to count the birds in your pictures by the way. 🙂
